Happy Summer Everyone! We have all summer to rest and rejuvenate. Still I hope some of that rejuvenation and rest comes in the form of scholarship. Reading is fundamental. But we cannot forget the Math. Did you know that studies indicate that most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in Reading . (White 1906; Heynes, 1978, Entwisle and Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996 and Downey, 2004). Most students lose about 2 monthsgrade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills. (Cooper, 1996). This is very serious loss, and it is preventable!
Please have your child log on to MYON.com and take advantage of our free online library! Each student at Ebbets Field was given their own personal log on and a list of recommended books. This is critical to maintaining their reading levels over the summer. This is a powerful learning opportunity. Also, there is an abundance of sources to keep our students calculating.
We invite everyone to long on and enjoy NRICH (enriching Mathematics) and see and enjoy the array of challenges from Playing with Polygons to Reasoning with Data. In addition, our students can log onto I-Ready all year. All of this is available to your child.
You must encourage them to use these tools. They are powerful. We cannot wait to see them back in September. Many will be involved in the SASF summer program. It begins on July 6 and there is still space available. Come and see Mr. K. Watson to register! We hope to see you soon. The Office will be open throughout the summer if you need any information. Feel free to reach out to Ms. Mellis at 646-753-2360. We are happy to serve you.
Hello Ebbets Field Community!
Can you believe we have 5 day left in the 2014-15 School Year! It was an amazing journey. We became a Community School and forged many new and exciting partnerships. We are retooling and working harder and harder to become the school that every child and every parent wants to attend. The school where students are continually engaged in high interest, hands on and minds on activities. The school where parents are informed, engaged, empowered and involved as partners in their children’s academic program. A school where every decision is linked to data and increases student achievement.
This summer the majority of our children will be home; let’s engage them in meaningful summer reading. We have built a unique summer reading program through MYON an online reading program for our children. Please make sure you ask your child for their log on information. We will also have a summer recreation program through SASF housed at our campus from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Please reach out to Ms. Blair for more details.
Please feel free to contact us throughout the summer with any question or concern you may have. We look forward to seeing you.
Tomorrow our doors will open and we welcome our children back to school! Back to new opportunities with old friends. I cannot wait to see every one of you. I hope your summer was magical. I hope you rested and I hope that you found that sweet space where your mind becomes open and ready to receive, process, and synthesize information. I hope you found that wonderful place where you become a learner. Here’s to another great year! I cannot wait to learn with you.
It is always darkest before the dawn. I know that our school, district, and city and state performed poorly on the Common Core Assessments. I know how upsetting this is for everyone. I also know that tests and scores do not define children, parents, teachers, schools, districts or Cities.
Our students did make progress. How much progress? We don’t know yet. We know that common core assessments are infinitely more difficult than old assessments. We know that this year’s performance is a base line and we will know how well we meet the challenges for next year. We know that we must and will keep moving toward something better. Our scores will increase. This data will guide our journey. We need our school and community to help us — help your children to succeed under these new measurements.
We need for parents and the community to keep your faith in our children, our teachers, our administrators, our schools and our people. We will figure this out together and we will continue to grow great children. Thank you for your support!
District 17’s Community Superintendent Buffie Simmons is hosting her second annual Community Feast this Saturday 12/15. The Feast is hosted at our Campus in our Gymnasium. We are very, very excited for the opportunity to host. We give Kudos to Ms. Simmons and her team who have worked tirelessly on this event. We hope to see you there.
Parents, students and faculty:
I remember hearing that faith meant believing when common sense tells you otherwise. This is often true. Faith in a greater good or a common understanding, defies us when we hear that twenty kindergarten students and seven adults lost their lives in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Still, we must have Faith. We must believe.
We must acknowledge that bad, unspeakable, unconscionable things can happen to good and innocent people but that GOOD will always triumph. I promise you that our school and all the schools in NYC will work with our Building Response Teams to ensure our collective safety but most importantly our children’s safety.
These acts are dispicable and will never be forgiven or tolerated. Our guidance teams work diligently to ensure our students mental and emotional health and will be conducting group and individual counseling for any students who are suffering the emotional impact of this event. I am proud to be the leader of Ebbets Field Middle School and I ensure you that I will use every resource available to me to ensure our children’s safety. I am responsible for safeguarding the most important resource in the world–your children and my faculty. I take this responsibility very seriously. It is an honor to be entrusted with this task and I am forever humbled.
Please speak to your children about this incident and ensure them that we are in charge and we are ready and able to protect them. Tonight as you count your blessings I know your children’s names will be first on your lips. Tonight, hug your children long and hard and often. Make sure they know the adults in their life will keep them safe and good will always prevail. Join me in wishing the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Peace and Healing. May each of you have a blessed New Year.
Ebbets Field Middle School wil be attending Summer School at PS 241. This is a lovely school community and we are very excited to be sharing our summer with so many wonderful schools, families and leaders. Summer School begins on July 9 at 8:30 sharp! Students will be dismissed at 12:30 sharp. Breakfast and lunch are available for all students. The last instructional day will be August 2. Testing will take place the following week. Please make sure that you arrive on time and ready to work.
Hello-Testing is around the corner. It really is. Please help us help your child by ensuring s/he study, read, calculate and hypothesize. Home is a wonderful place to apply what we learn in the school house! The common core is all about making that transfer from home to school. Making the learning real world, applicable, understandable, stimulating. We have to ensure that your child is always thinking, reasoning, wondering, creating. It’s not that hard. But we are competing with a gaming world. It’s ok. They can enjoy these things too. But twenty minutes of reading, twenty minutes of thinking, twenty minutes of calculating and twenty minutes of writing can do more for your child than any video game can.
Have your child log onto IXL and practice his/her math. Dare him to read TEENBIZ3000 every night! Look at the textbooks with your child and see how s/he can apply some of these concepts to real life. We need you to partner with us. We need you this month to really inspire your child to focus! calculate! inquire! reason! wonder! ask! analyze! hypothesize!
Please join us in this endeavor and we promise you we will do whatever it takes to make sure your child is on the path to college and career readiness. We need you though You are the most effective teacher your child will ever have. Never forget that and stand proud and firm. Readers are Leaders! Thank you.
At Ebbets Field Middle School everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner. We know, understand and believe that a successful school is one that is collaboratively built by its staff, students, parents and community. We will prepare students for success in high school, higher education and life. We will create an environment where children see themselves as successful and competent individuals. Everyone at Ebbets Field works to achieve this end. We know and accept that everyone’s success is our success and anyone’s failure is our failure. If we are to succeed — nobody can fail! We can do it; we will do it; and we’ll do it together!
